About the Event:

About the activity

In honor of Earth Hour 2024, we welcome you to join our team of experts in a distinctive nocturnal adventure, specifically centered on the documentation of wildlife in the vast desert landscape. This immersive experience encourages you to forge a connection with nature, acquiring valuable insights into the pivotal role played by nocturnal creatures, while actively contributing to this year’s Earth Hour initiatives.

During this activity, you will have the chance to explore the diverse wildlife inhabiting the desert. Your active involvement in this activity contributes significantly to data collection for ongoing research through the lens of citizen science, as it aids in preserving the natural beauty of the region. Join us for an event that combines education, hands-on conservation, and community connection as we collectively contribute to the ongoing research and safeguard the environmental treasures for generations to come.

No experience is necessary, although a reasonable level of fitness is required. Volunteers will need to be able to walk in desert sand for 2-3 km and record data on their cellphones. We welcome volunteers of all ages; however, it is not suitable for babies, and volunteers under 18 can only attend when accompanied by adults, please reach out to [email protected] for inquiries.

About Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a global environmental movement started by WWF. From its humble beginnings in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, WWF’s Earth Hour has grown to become one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment with its well-known symbolic ‘lights-off’ from 8:30 to 9:30 pm local time on the last Saturday of March each year. Last year, in the UAE, we had 5K+ that joined the movement, resulting in over 30k actions taken!

As we move forward into 2024 and beyond, we are rallying everyone around Earth Hour’s central purpose: to inspire action for our planet, our one shared home. One unifying moment to switch off from our daily habits and distractions and give an Hour for Earth. If replicated by individuals worldwide, that will turn a singular Earth Hour into thousands and millions of hours of action. Together, let’s create the Biggest Hour for Earth!

How long will it take?

The area of impact it contributes to

The data you help collect will support the expansion of our conservation efforts, and will be used to:

  • Identify species, distribution and important areas for the various life stages of each species
  • Monitor recovery and pressures
  • Investigate how Protected Areas affect populations
  • Data collected around the various species can feed into the National Plans of Action for the conservation of these species and support IUCN red listing efforts
  • Help change people’s attitudes and behaviors towards bats, scorpions and geckos.

This activity supports our objective to:

  • Protect 30% of the UAE’s wild areas by 2030.
  • Make 5,000 new research-grade observations on iNaturalist– that’s 30% more data than we currently have for the UAE on the iNaturalist app.
