Whale Bone Recovery

Jubail Mangrove Park, Jubail Mangrove Park - Al Jubail Island - Abu Dhabi
Endangered Species

About the Event:

This event is a collaboration between Zayed University, The UAE Dolphin Project Initiative, Jubail Mangrove Park, Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, Emirates Nature WWF, and Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
Background
The skeleton of a Bryde’s whale was discovered by a paddle boarder in a remote area of mangroves on Jubail Island, Abu Dhabi. It is estimated that the body of the whale (11.5 - 15m long) has been there for several years, and the bones are becoming damaged and dispersed by the impact of the waves. The bones have been spread over quite a wide area. The Abu Dhabi Natural History Museum would like to display the skeleton. However, due to the inaccessible location, the bones must be moved by hand to a temporary holding area.

We are recruiting a team of volunteers to manually transport the bones (some of which are very heavy and will require several people to carry them) through the mangrove forest to the road. You will need to wade through several kilometers of mud and trees to get through.

Due to the nature of the work, volunteers must be physically fit, healthy, and over the age of 15.

The bones need to be recovered at low tide, therefore, we advise that you arrive at 5:00 AM sharp at Jubail Mangrove Park. From there, we will carpool to a restricted area that has the bones we intend to recover.
